About Happisburgh
The village of Happisburgh is on the North East coast of the County of Norfolk. It is about 14 miles south east of the popular seaside town of Cromer. Great Yarmouth is approximately 22 miles to the south east.
Happisburgh has the only independently lighthouse in Great Britain. Built in 1790 and originally one of a pair, it is the oldest working light in East Anglia. Furthermore, with a range of 18 miles, the light flashes three times every 30 seconds. You can see the lighthouse from the car park and the bay with it’s distinctive with red and white stripes. You can also see inside the lighthouse and climb the tower on open days.
This location has a fantastic sandy and secluded beach. Consequently, it is popular with families as it has an excellent pay and display car park, toilet and a children’s play area. The proceeds from the car park pay for the facilities. The short walk to the beach is down a slope.
At low tide, on a lovely summer day, the walk to Walcott or Sea Palling is a real pleasure. You can walk for miles and are likely to have the beach almost to yourself.
Happisburgh has gained a reputation as being one of the fastest eroding coastlines in Great Britain. Even with large boulders in front, the sandy cliffs along this coastline are prone to erosion especially in winter. The landscape is forever changing. Unfortunately with climate change and rising sea levels the situation is likely to get worse.
